The Biggest Learning in the Pharma Sales Industry:

Host (Pharma Vacancy): Welcome to the platform, Waseem Sir! We are incredibly honored to have you here to guide our young medical representatives and freshers. Let’s dive straight into your journey. Looking back at your successful career, what has been your biggest learning in the Pharma Sales industry?

Waseem Hassan Sheikh: Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity to share my thoughts. I truly appreciate the initiative taken by Pharma Vacancy to guide freshers and young professionals.

To answer your question, one of my biggest learnings in the pharma sales industry is that consistency and relationship-building are far more important than short-term targets. Sales numbers may fluctuate month to month, but trust built with doctors, chemists, and colleagues creates long-term success. I have learned that patience, discipline, and continuous learning from the field are the real keys to growth in this profession.

Top 3 Qualities to Hire a New Medical Representative:

Host: That is a profound insight. Consistency definitely beats short-term hustle! Moving on to a question many freshers ask us—as an Area Sales Manager, what are the top 3 qualities you look for when hiring a new Medical Representative for your team?

Waseem Hassan Sheikh: When hiring a new Medical Representative, I mainly look for these three core qualities:

  1. Communication Skills: The ability to confidently and clearly explain product knowledge to doctors.
  2. Positive Attitude and Learning Mindset: Pharma sales is a dynamic field, so the willingness to learn and adapt is very important.
  3. Discipline and Field Commitment: A successful MR must be consistent with fieldwork, doctor coverage, and follow-ups.

Skills can always be trained, but attitude and commitment must come from the individual.

The Secret to In-Clinic Effectiveness & Doctor Relationship:

Host: Absolutely! “Hire for attitude, train for skills” is the ultimate mantra. Now, Sir, building relationships with doctors is often called an art. What is your secret or core advice for In-Clinic Effectiveness?

Waseem Hassan Sheikh: My core advice is simple: Respect the doctor’s time and always add value to the interaction. Instead of only promoting products, focus on sharing useful scientific information and understanding the doctor’s prescribing preferences. Being professional, well-prepared, and consistent in follow-ups helps build true credibility. Over time, doctors begin to trust you not just as a salesperson, but as a reliable professional partner.

Golden Advice for Freshers in Pharma Sales:

Host: Adding value rather than just detailing—that’s a masterclass right there! Before we wrap up this wonderful session, what is your one piece of “Golden Advice” for freshers who are just starting their career in pharma sales today?

Waseem Hassan Sheikh: My golden advice for freshers is: Be patient, stay disciplined, and keep learning from the field every single day. In the beginning, challenges and rejection are common, but they are also your best teachers. Focus on improving your product knowledge, communication skills, and daily planning. With dedication and persistence, pharma sales can offer excellent career growth and outstanding leadership opportunities. Thank you once again for this platform. I hope my experiences can help guide young professionals starting their journey.

Host: Thank you so much, Waseem Sir, for your valuable time and these golden nuggets of wisdom. We are sure our readers will benefit immensely from your guidance!
