Every year, thousands of candidates apply for the job of a Medical Representative (MR) after completing their graduation. They know it’s a target-based job. They know they will have to face rejections on the field. But they still apply. There are several strong reasons behind this.
I understand these reasons deeply because, a decade ago, I had those exact same reasons.
Reason 1: The Urgent Need for a Job
In India, millions of families belong to the middle class. For many students from these families, cracking expensive exams like JEE or NEET is beyond their reach. Their options usually come down to two paths: prepare for a government job or step into the private sector.
This choice heavily depends on their family’s financial condition. If the family can support them for 2 to 3 years, they often prepare for government exams. But if the family is facing a financial crisis, waiting is not an option.
They need to join the corporate world immediately. Since graduation is the basic stepping stone for a well-paying career, many graduates choose the pharma sales profession to support their families quickly.
Reason 2: A Lifestyle of Professional Luxury
Yes, it is a target-based corporate sales job. But people are drawn to it because of the excellent lifestyle it offers. When an MR achieves their yearly targets, they often become eligible for fully sponsored foreign trips.
Even in their daily lives, successful Medical Reps can afford a great standard of living, including buying their own cars. These perks naturally attract freshers to this profession.
Reason 3: A Highly Respected Profession
Although this is a sales job, our “customers” are very different. Here, we interact with doctors—some of the most respected and highly qualified professionals in society. Building professional relationships with them brings a lot of respect, which fuels our willpower to face any rejections in the field with a smile.
Reason 4: Attractive Salary & Incentives
Before joining this field, we often ask our friends, relatives, or seniors about its growth potential. This small personal survey quickly reveals the high income and massive incentive potential of the pharma industry.
Growth Corners For a Medical Representative:
If you are a Medical Representative with the right skills and dedication, the sky is the limit. Let me give you my own example.
Even with a degree in Arts, I started my journey as a Medical Rep. I worked hard on the ground for 6 years, and then I earned my promotion as an Area Business Manager. During those initial 6 years, I achieved two foreign trips, earned handsome incentives, and was able to support my family fully.
Currently, I have been working as an Area Business Manager for the last 4 years. I plan to continue in this role for another 1 or 2 years before stepping up as a Regional Business Manager.
So, overall, if you build your skills here, many doors will open for you. This job offers a handsome annual increment based on your performance. Nowadays, a top-ranked multinational or reputed Indian pharma company offers a starting CTC of around ₹3.5 Lakhs to a fresher, which is a fantastic starting point.
